Baby Development in the First Month, What Parents in Rostock Should Know

The first weeks with your baby are special, intense and sometimes overwhelming. In my work as a midwife in Rostock I see how many questions arise during the first month. That is why I would like to give you a gentle overview of baby development in the first month.

⭐ Arriving in the World

During the first weeks your baby mainly needs one thing, to arrive. The transition from the protected womb to this new and sometimes bright world is a great achievement. Many newborns sleep up to 16 or even 18 hours a day. This is completely normal. Sleep means development.

I always encourage parents to observe their baby closely. How does your baby react to touch, to your voice, to light. Even now your baby is starting to get to know you.

⭐ Physical Development

In the first month most babies gain weight again after losing a little during the first days. Feeding plays a central role. Whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding, what matters most is that your baby drinks regularly and effectively.

Movements are still uncoordinated. Arms and legs move in a jerky way. The grasp reflex is very noticeable. If you place your finger into your baby’s tiny hand, your baby will hold on tightly. These reflexes are important signs of healthy development.

⭐ Senses and Perception

Many parents are surprised how attentive newborns already are. Your baby can see best at a distance of about 20 to 30 centimeters. This is exactly the distance during breastfeeding or when being held in your arms. Your baby recognizes your voice and reacts strongly to familiar sounds.

I recommend enjoying plenty of skin to skin contact. Closeness, warmth and your scent provide security. This strengthens bonding and supports development.

⭐ Early Checkups in Rostock

An important part of the first month are the early medical checkups. In Germany these examinations begin right after birth. In Rostock they are carried out by your pediatrician.

During these appointments your baby’s weight, size and reflexes are checked. If you feel unsure, use these visits to ask your questions. No concern is too small.

⭐ Emotional Development

Even if your baby does not smile consciously yet, your baby senses your emotions very clearly. Calmness, loving words and repeated routines provide orientation. Many parents wonder if they might spoil their baby. In the first month there is no spoiling. There are only needs waiting to be met.

If you feel unsure, tired or full of questions, you are always welcome to reach out to me. Especially during the first weeks, supportive guidance is incredibly valuable.

❤️ Whenever you have something on your mind, I am happy to be by your side. For your questions, thoughts, and all the little moments in between, I am just a phone call away. I look forward to accompanying you with warmth and expertise ❤️
