Packing Your Hospital Bag – Checklist for Giving Birth in Rostock

Updated: Dec 11, 2025

When I support families here in Rostock, one question comes up again and again: “What do I actually need to pack in my hospital bag?” Many expectant parents aren’t sure what’s truly important and what the clinics in Rostock already provide. That’s why I want to give you a practical, easy-to-follow checklist today.

Even though I’m not with you in the delivery room, I’m here for you whenever you need guidance or reassurance, whether you’re already in the clinic or your baby has just arrived.

⭐When should you pack your hospital bag?

I recommend having your hospital bag ready around 36 weeks of pregnancy. This helps you stay relaxed in case your baby decides to come a little earlier. And if you’re still unsure about what you actually need, I’m always happy to help.

⭐ What clinics in Rostock usually provide

Many parents pack far too much because they don’t know what’s already available on-site. In Rostock’s clinics – such as the Südstadtklinik or the Schillingallee Clinic – you will usually receive:

  • Basic nursing pads

  • Postpartum pads and maternity sanitary towels

  • Baby clothing for your stay

  • Diapers for the first days

  • Blankets and cloths for the baby

  • Hygiene items like disposable pads

Of course, exact supplies may vary slightly from clinic to clinic. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out – I’m here to help you keep track of everything.

⭐ My checklist for your hospital bag

Here’s a well-structured list so you won’t forget anything important, while also avoiding overpacking.

For you

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Nursing bra and soft socks

  • Hair tie or headband

  • Toiletry bag (toothbrush, shower gel, lip balm – very important!)

  • Towels (depending on clinic)

  • Snacks & drinks

  • Phone + charger

  • Important documents:

    • Maternity record

    • ID card

    • Health insurance card

    • Birth plan or preferences (if you have one)

For your baby

  • An outfit for the drive home

  • A warm jacket/overall depending on the season

  • Car seat for the trip home

  • Optional: a special hat if you prefer your own

For your partner or support person

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Phone + charger

  • A light blanket or sweater for nighttime

⭐ Regional specifics in Rostock

The clinics here in Rostock are well equipped, but there are a few local details I notice again and again in my work:

  • Many parents love the closeness to the sea and like to bring something calming from home, like lavender spray or music

  • Thanks to easy city access, you can leave the baby car seat in the car until you actually need it, saving space in your bag.

  • Clinics in Rostock work closely with outpatient midwives. This means:As soon as your baby is born, I’m happy to support you, with breastfeeding questions, postpartum care, or any small uncertainties.

⭐ Why a well-packed hospital bag matters

A thoughtfully prepared hospital bag gives you a sense of security during labour. You don’t need to think or search for anything, you can focus fully on yourself, your contractions, and later your baby.

And if you’re already at the clinic and wondering whether you forgot something important: You can contact me any time. My support doesn’t start only once you’re home, it begins wherever you need it.

Whenever you have something on your mind, I am happy to be by your side. For your questions, thoughts, and all the little moments in between, I am just a phone call away. I look forward to accompanying you with warmth and expertise.

Your midwife, Christine Schuhr 💗
