The first days with a newborn are truly special. At the same time, many questions arise, especially when everything is new. As a midwife, I support families in Rostock after birth, and I see again and again how unsure parents feel at the beginning. That is exactly why I want to share the most important basics of newborn care with you and show you that you are much closer to your baby than you might think right now.
I do not work in the delivery room. I support families after the birth. However, I am always available for my women in the hospital if questions or uncertainties arise. After discharge, I accompany you through the postpartum period and support you with calmness, experience, and an open ear.
⭐ Your baby’s skin mainly needs protection
A newborn’s skin is very delicate and sensitive. Less is clearly more. During the first weeks, clear water is completely sufficient. Care products are usually not necessary and can even disturb the natural protective barrier of the skin. If you bathe your baby, keep it short, warm, and calm. I show parents in Rostock how to hold their baby safely and how quickly the initial fear disappears.
⭐ Umbilical cord care, simple and safe
The umbilical cord stump falls off on its own within the first days of life. The most important thing is to keep it dry. Air is the best support here. You do not need special products as long as the navel looks normal. If you feel unsure or something looks different than expected, I am happy to check it during a home visit or explain what to watch for while you are still in the hospital.
⭐ Diaper changes are moments of closeness and communication
Changing diapers is much more than basic care. It is a moment of closeness between you and your baby. Speak calmly, take your time, and observe how your baby responds. Especially during the postpartum period, I often see how much babies enjoy these quiet rituals. Again, clear water is usually sufficient. Wet wipes can be practical when you are out, but at home they are often unnecessary.
⭐ Nails, hair, and small peculiarities
Your baby’s nails can be surprisingly sharp. In the first weeks, gently filing them is best. I usually recommend nail scissors only once you feel confident. Hair does not need special care. A soft brush is completely sufficient. Many things that worry parents, such as dry skin or small flakes on the scalp, are completely normal adjustment processes.
⭐ Trust yourself
The most important part of newborn care is you. Your baby does not need perfection, but closeness, warmth, and attention. Everything else will grow over time. I accompany you through this first intense period in Rostock and remind you again and again how much you are already doing right.
If you have questions or would like support during the postpartum period, feel free to contact me. You do not have to walk this path alone.
Whenever you have something on your mind, I am happy to be by your side. For your questions, thoughts, and all the little moments in between, I am just a phone call away. I look forward to accompanying you with warmth and expertise.
Your midwife, Christine Schuhr 💗
